Sandfly Creek Fire Damaged Bird Area

MACKAY people fear a fire at the Sandfly Creek Environmental Reserve last week has destroyed protective cover for migratory shorebirds that come from as far away as the Arctic Circle.

Mackay Conservation Group Coordinator Patricia Julien said the scrub and grass fire which erupted on September 23 had destroyed vegetation on the dunal areas above the wader roost sites and almost burnt the actual roost sites.

"Protection has also gone for ground nesting and feeding birds such as brown quail," she said.

"This is an area of international and national significance for migratory shorebirds which fly from the Arctic Circle - where they nest in the Northern Hemisphere summer - each year to follow the eastern coast wetlands of Australia during our summer.

Ms Julien said these birds were starting to arrive in Mackay now and would be here through to April.

She was asking the public to avoid the area during the time the waders were roosting - now until April. …
