Too Far off Road for This Beach Basher

FOUR-WHEEL drive enthusiasts love the excitement of driving off road but one driver tried the impossible - driving on water.

After that failed attempt there was no miracle in sight, as the vehicle became bogged and abandoned at the northern end of Llewellyn Bay, near Armstrong Beach.

The vehicle, which has been abandoned since early December, has become a concern for residents of Llewellyn Bay and Freshwater Point.

One resident, Sylvia Greenwood, who took these photographs, said the four-wheel drive was more than 100 metres out from the beach and the owner could not be contacted because the vehicle's number plates were hidden by sand.

"There has been a stream of people going down to the beach to look at it," she said.

"Tides have washed over it and now bits are starting to pollute the beach like a headrest and engine cover.

"My concern is that as this area is a marine park, that petrol, oil and battery acid may start to destroy the habitat," Ms Greenwood. …
