CHERYL RYAN, Ruth Harrison and Haley Matheson form the management team behind Pinevale Villas, a modern aged-care hamlet in Goonellabah.

Pinevale has come a long way in the past year as Lismore's first supported living community.

Sales manager Cheryl has been with Pinevale Villas from the start.

"On the first day (October 22, 2007) we had eight residents move in," she said.

"Now we've sold about 43 units."

"Residents buy their unit and can come and go as they please," Cheryl said.

"Couples can share a unit and bring their beloved pooch with them."

Ellie, who lives at Pinevale, said that making the move was the best thing she ever did.

"It's wonderful," she said. "I look after myself, but it's good to have others to chat to."

Manager Ruth Harrison said the services offered by Pinevale were completely flexible.

"Pets are allowed and visitors can stay over. We have daily activities and provide freshly-cooked meals."

Haley Matheson, who is a registered nurse and the care co-ordinator at Pinevale, has noticed changes in the lives of residents.

"Their quality of life improves, as does their health," she said.

"They get exercise here which they may not have had at home."

There are several reasons why the villas have been so successful.

"We are close to facilities," Ruth said.

"There are not many of these facilities around. Supported communities are becoming an option between a retirement village and nursing home."

Ruth said family involvement was also important.

Many of the residents are from the Northern Rivers and know each other or their families. …
