THE war of aggression by Israel against the Palestinians in Gaza is a manifestation of a mentality well described, with perfect prescience to today's endless conflicts, by George Orwellian Notes on Nationalism.

This notion has also become embedded in the Australian political psyche as the nation's troops wage war in Afghanistan and Iraq under the banner of American democracy, while condoning Israel's invasion of Gaza.

Prime Minister Rudd's insistence that Australian troops stay the course in Afghanistan, whatever that means, indicates that Labor is also blinded by the very same nationalistic blindness that Orwell warns against.

In this clash of civilisations, the notion that 'ours' is better than 'theirs', and therefore must triumph, is as philosophically bankrupt as the idea of Aryan supremacy over all of Europe that saw that part of the world descend into the bloodiest and most destructive conflict of all time.

We are told very little about what is happening in Afghanistan until well after the fact. …
