Supporters Trust Closer to Becoming a Reality

NEWCASTLE United Supporters Club looks set for an imminent switch to become a Supporters Trust after a city centre meeting last night.

The hope is that such a move would help improve relations between Newcastle United and its fans in the long-term, with a recognised voice for supporters and the election of a fan representative to liaise with top brass at St James's Park to put forward the views of fans. More than 200 members attended the meeting at the Tyneside Irish Centre with representation from Supporters Direct, a Government-backed organisation that provides assistance to supporters clubs in the UK, explaining to fans the advantages to members of trust status. Supporters Direct feel that a change in direction will make a difference for NUSC as it aims to become a democratic, not-for-profit organisation of supporters.

A Supporters Direct statement said: "The main difference is that the group would now be eligible to own shares and can raise money from fans to buy shares in the club. …
