SCU 'Wall' a Sad Public Reflection

LISMORE mayor Jenny Dowell knows how much Southern Cross University (SCU) contributes to the greater Lismore district, but she is not sure the general public is convinced.

At the opening of the National Tertiary Education Union's (NTEU) 'Our Universities Matter' campaign, Cr Dowell said the university permeated most aspects of local government, arts and culture, business and economy and it should be supported in every way possible.

"SCU offers a direct service to families who could never afford to send their children away to university," she said.

But Cr Dowell said that she lamented the 'glass wall' that seemingly surrounded SCU.

"I feel comfortable here but the general community does not feel comfortable entering this space," she told a gathering of about 20 people outside Y-Block auditorium on Thursday. "Perhaps someday this campaign could be launched in the CBD of Lismore, so people walking past could think of what SCU means to the community. …
