IN A packed-out room of the South Street Humanities Building, Liz Jordan is serene among the banter of the crowds as she sends one bowl after another rolling down the indoor green with deadly accuracy.

As another shiny, black orb comes to rest nestled up to the jack, the 96-year-old, who has been bowling since the 60s, looks like she could hit the target with her eyes closed.

"I do it for the friendship and because you get to meet new people," Mrs Jordan said of the weekly senior citizens bowls.

"Years ago some of us used to stay behind and play 500."

She said her love of keeping active, especially with tennis, had been the key to her impressive vitality and she wished today's children had the opportunity to run free as she had done in her youth.

Mrs Jordan, who has lived in Ipswich her entire life, has fond memories of her childhood when the young ones were free to walk home after the sun went down and trips to the Brassall bridge were the perfect way to keep cool in the balmy summer heat. …
