IN THE event of a blackout, Ipswich residents should travel to the home of Albert White.

Mr White is the proud owner of 760 lanterns and has the low energy bill to justify it.

The retired Lockrose resident holds the unofficial title of Australia's largest lantern collection and it's doubtful there is anyone to challenge him.

He is also the only Australian member of the Guild of Lantern Researchers and yes, lantern researching does have an official body.

"It's an obsession," he said.

"If I walk past a lantern I want, I have to get it.

"I imagine my collection is the largest in Australia, perhaps even the world."

Mr White has been collecting lanterns for 10-12 years and said he has invested a large amount of time and money into his passion.

"I used to go to the markets every weekend and come back with four or six, but I rarely go now because there aren't many lanterns around anymore," he said.

"My friends say it's because I own them all. …
