SMOULDERING ruins are all that is left of the Porter family home, the fourth home in the Ipswich region to be destroyed by fire in the past three weeks.

Debbie Porter was busy making coffee in the kitchen yesterday morning while her nine-year-old daughter was watching TV when the smoke alarms pierced the stillness of the morning in Glenore Grove.

She got her daughter to safety but by the time she returned, the fire had taken hold.

"I just grabbed the dog and ran," Mrs Porter said.

Standing in front of the burnt-out wreckage, surrounded by friends and neighbours, Mrs Porter struggled to come to terms with her loss.

Her 14-year-old son was supposed to be going to cubs last night but the uniform draped over the computer desk was, like everything else, lost to the flames.

TWO passers-by, Helena Keating and Kelly Wells, were the first on the scene to offer help.

They tried to save the childrens' play equipment but the heat of the fire began blowing out the windows so they headed to the shed and wheeled out what they could. …
