Report Reveals 'Distressing' Drought Impacts

A REPORT detailing the main concerns of drought-affected farmers will be presented in Canberra on Thursday.

Agforce president Peter Kenny, who chaired a panel of experts that toured rural communities across Australia during recent months, said the report would be a "disturbing" read.

"No matter where we went, there was a whole thread of depression and, in some, cases, hopelessness," Mr Kenny

said.

From the forums, opinions, advice and recommendations were compiled into a report, which Mr Kenny hopes will help change the national drought policy.

Pauline and Paul Sutton of Mount Whitestone, who attended a drought forum held in Gatton earlier in the year, said they were hopeful the forum was a step in the right direction.

Mrs Sutton identified at the forum that drought was not the only issue affecting farmers - Government policy allowing imports into Australia when they produce the same product locally was also a concern.

Mr Kenny said attending drought forums across the nation was "distressing" but there were many key points raised, similar to points made by the Suttons. …
