Taser Push off Target: Retailer; Arming Workers {Lsquo}recipe for Disaster'

A RECIPE for disaster is how one Ipswich retailer describes the suggestion that shopkeepers should be armed with taser guns, capsicum spray or other weapons to fend off thieves.

Another retailer, Redbank Plains' 7-Eleven store manager Jenno, said arming shopkeepers would be asking for trouble.

"(The weapons) could be used against the shopkeeper," she said.

"Give (robbers) what they want. Don't fight back.

"Everyone that's robbed us has been caught."

Jenno said a more sensible deterrent would be for the courts to look at toughening sentences for armed robbers.

Her store has been robbed once in the past two years.

"(The offender) didn't go to jail. Three years' suspended sentence for robbing a service station - that's ridiculous," she said.

One service station owner who experienced a robbery recently said arming shop assistants could be a dangerous practice.

She did not want her name published for fear the business may be considered a soft target for criminals. …
