Wild Weather Puts on Spectacular Show

WHILE residents west of Dalby were shuddering in the wake of a severe thunderstorm warning last night, local residents were counting their blessings they got through Wednesday night's storm unscathed.

State Emergency Service area controllers Andy Bickerton of Somerset Region and Richard Lewin of Gatton did not receive any calls for help Wednesday night.

"We didn't have any call outs and a friend said there was only 6mm in their rain gauge this morning," Mr Bickerton said.

Mr Lewin said: "We definitely had a storm cell come through here last night, but we had no calls whatsoever.

"We had little hail stones the size of your fingernail. You could hear it on the roof but by the time it hit the ground, it had dissolved."

Mr Lewin checked his rain gauge yesterday and was disappointed to find just 5mm.

Energex workers worked through Wednesday night to restore power to about 32,000 homes and businesses.

"Thousands of lightning strikes were recorded by the GPATS system as the storms passed over the region between 6pm and 8pm, with gusting winds combining to bring down powerlines," an Energex spokesman said. …
