Teen Avoids Ticket to Jail; Next Stop Probation over Bus Driver Bashing

A REDBANK State High School student has escaped jail over the bashing of a bus driver in March this year.

Ipswich Magistrates Court yesterday heard 17-year-old James Falepau Tuiluga lost his composure when the afternoon school bus driver refused to accept an invalid ticket.

Prosecutor Constable Jo Colston said Tuiluga, who was standing near the entrance to the bus, leaned back against one of the grab rails and launched into a kicking attack on the driver.

Const Colston said the victim was also punched and suffered a chipped tooth and a bloody nose.

Tuiluga pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm over the March 1 incident.

The court heard Tuiluga later explained to police he was under a lot of pressure both at home and at school and simply snapped.

Defence lawyer Justin Thomas said the stress his client was talking about was largely due to family matters, over which he had little or no control.

Mr Thomas said his client had excelled at the school since moving from Corinda State High, and was working 15 hours a week and playing sport. …
