CRAIG Wegert is a man on a mission.

The former national super-heavyweight weightlifting champion wants to return his sport to its glory days, when Darryl Eastlake bellowed and crowds roared their approval.

Wegert, who runs the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Springfield Weightlifting Club, missed out by one vote on a spot on the Australian Weightlifting Federation (AWF) board at its annual general meeting (AGM) in Sydney last weekend.

"I'm still considered by a lot of members as their junior," Wegert offered as the reason for not getting voted onto the board.

"There are guys that have been there for 20-30 years."

Wegert will continue in his bid to bring the 2009 national championships to Ipswich.

"I got some great reports and comments about my presentation on the future of the sport," Wegert said.

"They liked my plans and strategies for developing weightlifting Australia-wide like I have done in Ipswich. …
