Carpenter Flees Police; Driver Blames High-Powered Car after Chase

A PROVISIONAL licence holder drove at more than double the speed limit during a dangerous police pursuit at Collingwood Park in August.

Ipswich Magistrates Court heard Matthew Grant Weeks, 21, fled from police because he was worried about being fined for illegal modifications to his high-powered Nissan 180SX sports car.

Weeks yesterday pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and driving a car with illegal modifications.

Prosecutor Sergeant John Nelson said Weeks' car had too much power for the police, who tried to pull him over about noon on August 17.

Sgt Nelson said the offending vehicle overtook other cars, drifted around corners and reached speeds of about 120kmh in 60kmh zones.

"The police knew that to continue to chase the defendant would have been dangerous to the public," Sgt Nelson said.

The chase was called off, with police instead continuing patrols of the area in an effort to track Weeks down.

He was found a short time later and admitted outrunning police because he knew his car should not have been on the road. …
