Unlucky Felgate out to Break Auction Drought

Article excerpt

HAVING a strong hand in a feature greyhound event is nothing new to breeder, owner and trainer Paul Felgate.

The Gold Coast-based Felgate won the two semi-finals of the Highland Smash Repairs Magical auction series at the Ipswich Showgrounds last Wednesday night.

Mobile Phantom scored from box one in 25.21s. Iron Steed also had the rails alley and won in 25.25s.

For next Wednesday's $12,000 to the winner final, Iron Steed has again come up with the coveted rails alley.

"He would be my better chance," Felgate said.

"Mind you, I haven't had much luck in Ipswich auction races over the years."

Felgate pointed out that his boom sprinter, Just the Best, and another top dog, Ballistic Jet, both got beaten in semi-finals of the auction race in their years.

"Just the Best had won the Vince Curry at Ipswich by 16 lengths and looked a certainty," he said.

"So I'm not counting anything this year, just hoping for the best."

Troy Sharpe of Gatton has done a great job to have two finalists in Strictly Bizness and Kaycee Diva.

Earlier this year, Strictly Bizness, when trained at Capalaba by Alec Stevens, targeted the 520 metre auction series at Ipswich, but simply couldn't run out the distance.

The dog was then sent to Victoria for a successful campaign in short course events and has returned specifically for the rich Ipswich event over 431 metres.

Strictly Bizness was only fourth in his semi-final, though, which just managed to qualify for the final.

The talented Kaycee Diva can't draw a decent box anywhere. She was third from box seven last Wednesday.

Realistically, the final is wide open.

The box draw is: 1 Iron Steed (Paul Felgate), 2 Cookie Kwan (Paul Hull), 3 Lizzie Greystock (Denis Comerford), 4 Kaycee Diva (Troy Sharpe), 5 All Jazzy (John Edwards), 6 Strictly Bizness (Troy Sharpe), 7 Mobile Phantom (Paul Felgate), 8 Black Monty (Tom Noble), Reserves; 9 Lady Encounter (Lesley Griffiths), 10 Set to Impress (Lesley Griffiths). …
