DENIS Bramer is a collector of natural history and has several pieces of Ipswich's gems and petrified wood displayed in his Blacksoil home.

Mr Bramer began collecting gems in 1964 after some men asked if they could search for rocks on his farm.

"They asked if they could look for rocks on our place and that's how I got interested," Mr Bramer said.

He now goes on trips around Australia with his wife Margaret Bramer to look for new pieces for his collection.

"She knew, when we were going together, I was a rock hunter, so she just went along with it," Mr Bramer said.

"It's very enjoyable - you get out in the bush, where there is no noise.

"The hobby is ideal for a family with children - you go out to some picnic ground and just have a quiet look around and you might find something, you might not."
