A PRISONER in custody on a string of charges for crimes he allegedly committed around town was the cause of the brief evacuation at the Gympie Police Station watchhouse yesterday.

Brockwell Ernest Tompkins of Helen Street Gympie was remanded in custody until Thursday for seven offences including breaking into Gympie South School, Southside Bakery and a Mary Valley Heritage Railway train carriage between September 9 and 16.

Gympie Police Senior Constable Richard Nayler said Tompkins, 19, would also appear in court today on new charges relating to damaging the fire extinguisher system in the watch-house cells.

"The prisoner climbed up and ripped off the sprinkler in his cell, activating the whole system - there was water everywhere," Snr Const Nayler said.

"We evacuated the watchhouse and the man was charged with wilful damage and interfering with a fire extinguisher system."

Tompkins was arrested on Monday after police searched his Helen Street property and allegedly uncovered a large amount of stolen property taken from Southside Bakery and a pinch bar. …
