Christmas Colours of Red and Green in Local Gardens; Garden Gnome DOT CRANE Suggests Summer Reading Titles

Article excerpt

Hot steamy weather is the time for books - garden books of course.

You can borrow from the library, you can ask Santa to bring them, or you can buy them for yourself.

A good novel with gardening as a central character situated in Devon close to the moors is A Summer in the Country by Marcia Willett. I read it on Saturday - one of the rather warm days. Another is Banksias by Kevin Collins.I have many near my new home but enjoyed an unusual naturally growing banksia at The Palms. Beachside from Rainbow Beach to Caloundra wouldn't be the same without banksias. A garden nearby has a beautifully grown banksia robur.

The Living Wisdom of Tree by Fred Hageneder is a celebration of trees rather than a reference book. Just enjoy this book with its photographs. I read about Endai - a Pageant of Starlight from December 12-23 - honouring trees. It happens in Sendai and the trees are kelkova and I saw them in February still bare-leafed and sparkling with fairy lights. The parade has a sea of Santas. Sendai is called The City of Trees. Another for the eyes is Treasures of Botanical Art by Shirley Sherwood and Martyn Rix. Australian artists in the book are Celia Rosser and Paul Jones. Frangipani by Linda Ross and others is a stunner. It is worth having for the delightful colour range of frangipani depicted in this book. Nearby I have a yellow, a pink/white (a truly great one) a deep pink and the older fruit salad - a variegated pink/peach/yellow. A garden in Queen Street, Gympie, has a really good tree of this one. Horseshoe Bend has many pinks. Occasionally you see the wonderful red. Several of us keen gardeners have a blue but it hasn't yet flowered.

One book on my list is Reading the Garden the Settlement of Australia by Katie Holmes and others. …
