A MAN who pleaded guilty to a charge he disputed because he couldn't afford legal representation was told to come back to Gympie Magistrates Court and represent himself for a hearing.

Russell John Gerrard of Stephan Road Goomboorian was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs after he was questioned by police for leaving the scene after he smashed his car into a pole on Saturday, August 2.

A person who witnessed the minor prang on the corner of Stewart Terrace and Banks Pocket Road called police who went to the scene and then located Gerrard at a Goomboorian address, believed to be his sister's home.

Police prosecutor Jason Todman told the court when Gerrard was questioned by police he admitted he was the driver of the vehicle and he driven from the scene.

He said the officers detected alcohol on his breath and Gerrard told them he had two cans of beer prior to driving.

It was alleged he owned up to sharing a bottle of bourbon and a four-litre cask of wine the night before. …
