GYMPIE cricket players are dusting off their cricket gear, smearing on the sunscreen and taking to the field to enjoy the warmer weather outdoors today as the new season prepares to get underway.

And Gympie Cricket Association president Bob Blackburn says the new season will be "hotly contested and full of exciting action".

Meanwhile, local A-grade cricketer Lewis Waugh, playing in the Colts outfit, said he was keen to have a tilt at the premiership.

All the action that lies ahead was previewed last weekend with the Cooloola Civil Constructions Seven-a-side Competition.

Despite early concerns numbers would be down, the day was a complete success.

Cooloola Civil Constructions sponsored the event, in addition to acting as major sponsors for the cricket season itself, and Brendan Patterson said the day was a "total success".

"It had a family atmosphere and a great crowd was on hand," he said.

The winning teams for each of the four divisions contested were:

Division A Vitamin X, Division B Scruffy's Tigers, Division C Hopefuls and Division D Cooroy Cubs. …
