The Fraser Coast Mariners sailed into unchartered territory in Bundaberg on Friday night.

The Mariners, who finished third-last in the Sunshine Coast Rugby Union competition this year, are the Bundaberg Rugby Union Spring Cup competition leaders.

After two rounds, the Hervey Bay-based Mariners have a perfect record in what is the inaugural year of the off-season competition with two wins in two games.

A 67-19 win against the Alloway Falcons last week was backed up by a 34-15 win against the East Coast Buccaneers on Friday.

Centre Michael Bugeja, who plays rugby league for the Hervey Bay Seagulls A grade team during the winter, grabbed a hat-trick while flanker Dane Grabbe bagged a double.

Troy Nagti scored the other try while Grabbe kicked the extras.

Four teams will contest the competition over nine rounds this year with the top two going head-to-head in the final.

Trent De Vere, who was voted the Mariners A grade best and fairest at the end of the SCRU competition, said being top of the table had a strange feel about it. …
