AFTER much talk and planning I finally got to take my boat out to sea on Sunday, accompanied by a good fishing mate.

I phoned the Yamba Coastguard for an early report and was glad to hear the news at 5.30am that the swell was virtually non-existent and that the bar was totally flat.

My boat, a 5.3metre Blue Fin, is rigged to handle tough conditions, but like most fisherman I prefer not to put both the boat and myself to the test.

Once I reached the entrance to the bar I called in my trip to the Coastguard and gave them my expected return time of 1pm.

With such great conditions at hand we turned left and headed up the coast to Woody Heads and some known snapper spots. After no luck we decided to test our luck and opened up the throttle and headed for some reefs south of Evans Head.

It was a good decision as far as the fishing went, but not as far as our trip went.

By 11am we had a few good-sized snapper in the esky and we were ready to head back. …
