A controversial new proposal which would see new mothers receive up to $12,000 18 weeks after giving birth has been met with mixed reactions on the Fraser Coast.

Yesterday a Maryborough businessman slammed the recommendation by the Productivity Commission as "a joke" while a Maryborough mother-of-two threw her support behind it.

"I think it's fantastic," said Kaye North, whose daughter Emily is five weeks old.

"As a teacher I get 14 weeks paid maternity leave but an extra couple of weeks would have been great. It took me eight weeks with my first child to recover from childbirth and get into a routine - you want to give them the best start in life."

The proposed scheme, which is being pushed by the Rudd government, would see working mothers paid the minimum wage of $544 a week for 18 weeks plus any parental leave provided by the employers.

Stay-at-home mothers would be eligible for a maternity allowance of up to $6800 and new dads would get two weeks paternity leave. …
