Sean Keidge was fighting for his life in a Brisbane hospital while the man accused of stabbing him appeared in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court yesterday.

As Gubbo Fraser bounded into court flanked by two police officers, he waved at his family watching from the back of the room.

The six adults and two small children had been camping with Fraser at the Log Dump campsite near Tinnanbar on the night Mr Keidge was stabbed, New Year's Eve.

Fraser, 23, was charged with grievous bodily harm after the alleged attack.

A single stab wound pierced the liver of 42-year-old Mr Keidge, from Rosewood.

Princess Alexandra Hospital spokesperson Liz Jordan said Mr Keidge was still seriously ill in intensive care.

At his court appearance yesterday Fraser's lawyer Sarah Laikind said her client would be strongly contesting the charge.

"This was a matter that escalated from the catching of a turtle," she said.

"Other residents of the campsite, not understanding the indigenous right to catch turtles, became angry and there were threats made against Mr Fraser and his family. …
