SMASHED and flipped on its roof, it seemed impossible that anyone could walk away from the taxi crushed in a serious accident in South Grafton on Monday night.

Somehow, all six Clarence Valley residents involved in the two-car collision did just that.

Grafton woman Narelle Saunders could not believe her eyes when she saw the cab driven by her friend and colleague Gary Thurgate sitting battered and twisted on its roof on the corner of Vere and Bligh streets just after 6.15pm.

"It was a real fright seeing the taxi on its roof," Ms Saunders said. "Gary is probably one of the safest drivers on the road."

Yesterday Mr Thurgate, of Junction Hill, was recovering at home with a fractured elbow, while one of his passengers, a 41-year-old South Grafton was in a stable condition at Grafton Base Hospital. The taxi's second passenger, a male, was uninjured.

Police alleged the taxi had been travelling south on Bligh Street, when a Holden Commodore failed to give way at the intersection with Vere Street. …
