SUZUKI, the company that helped invent the compact four-wheel drive market, has released its largest model ever complete with the most powerful engine it has ever put behind the badge of its 4WD range.

And yet thanks to a raft of sophisticated engineering features, the new Grand Vitara can boast better fuel economy as well as lower emissions, while simultaneously delivering higher levels of comfort and convenience.

In launching the new Grand Vitara range, Suzuki also has introduced a second Prestige model that allows customers to choose a premium specification model with four or six-cylinder engines. Previously, the flagship Prestige model was only available with a V6.

Suzuki's general manager, Keith Carroll, said the new line-up with its 2.4-litre four cylinder and 3.2 V6 engines marketed alongside the existing 1.9-litre DDiS diesel, would confirm the Grand Vitara as the premier compact SUV on the market.

"The design brief was to deliver a compact four-wheel drive with higher on-road performance and tougher off-road capability," Mr Carroll said. "An overriding principle was that in refining the styling and mechanicals, the off -road performance was not to take a step backwards."

The new Grand Vitara range rationalises the previous three power choices of 1.6-litre, 2-litre and 2.7-litre engines, to two with the introduction of superior, new generation 2.4-litre DOHC four cylinder and 3.2-litre quad overhead camshaft V6 engines.

Both new engines feature variable valve timing.

The 2.4-litre is available in three and five-door models, (replacing the 1.6-litre three-door and 2-litre five-door Grand Vitaras).

The 3.2 V6 is packaged with a five-speed automatic transmission on the five door Prestige model.

The new 2.4 engine is rated at 122kW - a 67 per cent increase over the previous 1.6-litre engine with fuel efficiency improving to 8. …
