THANKS to a courageous mother, Dave Foley's life changed forever when he moved from a housing commission life in Sydney's west up north.

When her son was in sixth grade, the widowed Mrs Foley sold their Ermington home, packed up the car and headed to the North Coast.

"It was great timing. I had started getting into trouble at school in Sydney and I was bored, but once up here I was put into Ballina Public School, which was small enough so that everything I did got back to my mum," Mr Foley laughed.

After school, he started surveying, but again got bored and went to Sydney to do his carpentry apprenticeship.

"That's where I started to appreciate good architecture and design. But Sydney wasn't for me and I came back and got a job with a respected local builder, Wayne Price. From there I worked for multi-award winning Byron Design and Construction, and worked with that company's Rory O'Halloran as his site manager for 11 years. …
