High-Speed Fatality; Coast Man Dies in Head-On Collision

AN 80-year-old man died instantly after his small sedan slammed into a semi-trailer carrying logs in a head-on collision on the Bruce Highway, about 10km south of Maryborough, yesterday afternoon.

The Sunshine Coast man, the sole occupant of the car, was driving south when the accident happened at around 1pm at Pineapple Hill.

The driver of the north-bound truck was not injured.

The highway was closed in both directions for almost three hours.

Sergeant Tony McCarthy, the officer in charge of the Maryborough traffic branch, said the cause of the high-speed crash was not known yet.

"It appears the car veered across the highway and into the path of the truck suddenly," Sgt McCarthy said.

"For what reason we just don't know yet - it might have been a result of something medical but we will have to wait for the results of the autopsy.

"All we know is that it happened so quickly that the truck driver had no time to react."

Sgt McCarthy said the truck was doing between 90kmh and 95kmh at the time of the crash. …
