Catching a Breath; A Healthy Step in the Right Direction

EVEN when hooked to pure medical oxygen, Banora Point resident Alan McCormack struggles to walk more than 10 metres at a time.

But that didn't stop Mr McCormack from getting in step with other Australians to raise awareness for the sufferers of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

"I walked 500 metres," Mr McCormack said.

"And I did it happily."

Organised by TWEEDALS, a Tweed Heads-based support group, the "Catch our Breath Walk" was held on Wednesday at Tweed City Centre in support for the COPD World Day.

Similar walks were held all across Australia as part of the Australian Lung Foundation initiative with the collective distance tallied.

At Tweed Heads, more than 50 sufferers walked a total of 143.7km to raise awareness of the disease and promote fitness.

TWEEDALS, The Tweed Airway Limitation Support Group, spokeswoman Marion Walsham told the Tweed Daily News earlier the Australian Lung Foundation ranked COPD as the fifth leading cause of death in Australia. …
