Pottsville Is Not about to Lose Its Oval

POTTSVILLE residents are being reassured the sports oval in the heart of the town is not about to be sold off or devel- oped for shops, despite a rampant rumour to the contrary.

A Tweed Shire Council spokesperson yesterday moved to quell the rumour, saying "Council has no plans to change the use of the oval".

However she added "There is some discussion about moving the tennis courts.

"The Department of Lands has suggested locations, but council hasn't made any plans at this stage."

The rumour has been flying around the village while the developer of the nearby Seabreeze housing estate prepares to take on the council in the NSW Land and Environment Court over its failure to approve a shopping centre with a large supermarket in its estate.

According to the rum- our, the oval would go to make way for shops if the Seabreeze centre does not go ahead.

However, the council spokesperson said the council did plan to "engage with the community to investigate sites for a supermarket in the village pending the outcome of the Seabreeze shopping centre appeal in the Land and Environment Court". …
