YOUNG people of the Clarence Valley take a bow. Your behaviour during the recent Jacaranda and Coldstream festivals has prompted the district's most senior policeman to sing your praises.

Chief Inspector Darren Spooner took time out yesterday to make special mention of what he says is a new era developing across the Valley.

"In past years, especially around July Racing Carnival and Jacaranda Thursday time, many of the district's young people have behaved as if it was a time to get as drunk as possible and then get into trouble," he said.

"I am pleased to say that this trend is being replaced by a responsible attitude and it has been reflected in a near clean slate for serious assaults and drunk and disorderly conduct over these events."

Inspector Spooner said while residents had acted appropriately, it should also be recognised that a strong partnership between the police, licensed venues, Clarence Valley Council and event promoters had also played a key role in keeping proceedings family-friendly. …
