Grates Unleash the New 'Beast' in Coolangatta

WHEN you think of rock band drummers, nine times out of 10 you think tattooed, long-haired guy in leather.

Alana Skyring is none of these things and yet she is part of one Australia's most creative and interesting young groups - The Grates.

Looking and sounding like she would be more at home on a uni campus than in a band, Amanda has bobbed brown hair, an infectious laugh, a fresh face and a smile that could light up a room even from way back on the drum kit.

And yet she is an integral part of the quirky three-piece Brisbane band which has a new album - Teeth Lost-Hearts Won -and are about to hit the road for an Australian tour.

The band is heading to the Coolangatta Hotel on Saturday Night to treat the crowd to songs from its new album (and from their debut release Gravity Won't Get You High).

Known for their amazing backdrops and memorable stage shows (lead vocalist Patience was dressed as Batgirl at the most recent Splendour in The Grass at Byron), the band members have been playing with lighting this time and been busy in the rehearsal studio translating their recently written songs from recordings to live.

Alana said she was excited about the tour but she has had a few pressing concerns at home - her dog, Sam the Border Collie cross had an accident the night before and she has been playing nursemaid.

"He fell off a wall last night," she said.

"Mum and dad are shift working so I'm hanging around."

Band members, who are not long back from recording their album with Peter Katis (Interpol, Mates of State, The National) in the US, have been busy in the rehearsal studio.

They are determined to get things just right for their fans.

"We've been working for weeks, trying to get things together," Alana said.

They have been busy refocusing their songs from a recording mind-set to a live mind-set and now, after working overtime on the backdrops, the music and lighting, they are ready to hit the road and rock the crowds. …
