Wilkie Has a Year to Remember in 2008

IT is around this time of the year that awards are handed out to the best performed and most improved players and also to people who have made a significant contribution to our great sport of lawn bowls.

As this is my last bowls column for 2008, I usually take the time to reflect on events, tournaments and players who have made the headlines and heap praise on the many thousands of unheralded volunteers who contribute and administer our game either as umpires, coaches, and office bearers, markers and even selectors and bowlers who are always willing to help out whenever the call goes out.

In past years, I have chosen former Premier League Chairman Gary Andrews, and more recently Pat McErlean, host of the lawn bowls show on Radio TAB, and Lawn Bowls World website as recipients of the Bowls Round Up award.

Both men have over the years contributed to the sport to the benefit of all bowlers.

In 2008, the stand-out player on the bowls arena was without doubt, Leif Selby, who won the Australian Open, Indoor Championship, Queensland Open and represented Australia in both Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Carmen Anderson played superbly to win the Golden Nugget in record style to crush the invincible five times winner Karen Murphy.

Kelvin Kerkow withdrew from the Australian side and went on to win the 2008 Golden Nugget for the third time.

Julie Keegan made history in May this year winning three State Titles, including the coveted singles crown and narrowly missing a fourth title.

But amongst all the newsworthy events and great wins by many of the top bowlers all over Australia, one has to consider a bowler who has had a great year, not only as a bowler, but as a professional administrator and who a person who has been sought after by Bowls Queensland and Bowls Australia.

Despite this, he has remained loyal to his club and was runner up on no less than three occasions in major tournaments in this year alone! …
