THE Liberal Party - long in the doldrums in Murwillumbah - could be in for a new lease of life if Peter van Lieshout, husband of Tweed mayor Joan van Lieshout, gets his way.

Mr van Lieshout says the Murwillumbah branch of the party is "on its last legs" and he is desperately trying to revive it in time for Federal elections due within two years.

But he has only a matter of weeks to provide the necessary lifeline before Liberal Party rules mean the branch sinks completely.

His wife Joan stood on a Liberal Party ticket during the September Tweed Shire election.

She had intended standing as an independent but was approached to lead the Liberal ticket and did so because she had always agreed with Liberal philosophy.

Mr van Lieshout is no stranger to the ways of political parties.

The Greens Party in NSW has declared its opposition to his proposed development of a new, ecologically sustainable village west of Mt Warning and promised in the last state election it would do everything it could in Parliament to stop the project going ahead. …
