Are Tourists Rubbishing Our Region?

SOUTHERN Cross University social marketing researcher Kate Neale wants to look through your trash.

The Masters student at the School of Commerce and Management is undertaking a study on the recycling habits of our tourist population.

"I want to know when people go on holidays do they recycle as they would at home?" Ms Neale said.

"Or is there a shift in their motivation or a shift in their recycling practices."

The research is initially focused on the in-house recycling initiatives of holiday accommodation, including backpackers and self-catering apartments.

"The first phase of the research is to send out 1000 questionnaires to determine tourists' recycling behaviour," she said.

Ms Neale said she planned to use the information to develop a marketing plan which local councils, real estate agencies and other businesses could adopt to encourage their region's tourists to do the right thing.

"There are 80,000 people who live here in the Tweed Shire on a permanent basis, but it is estimated that at least half-a-million come for a visit. …
