Six Saved in Boat Fire

THREE people were taken to hospital suffering minor burns after a powerboat caught fire at Tweed Heads South on Saturday.

Six people aged in their 20s were aboard the 6.5 metre fibreglass "Heat Xchange" at Terranora Inlet when it burst into flames about 2pm.

The three injured passengers were taken to The Tweed Hospital.

A hospital spokeswoman yesterday said they had been treated and later discharged.

A NSW Maritime spokeswoman said the boat was about 30 metres from the Dry Dock Road boat ramp when the fire broke out.

"A NSW Maritime officer was on scene and extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher," she said.

The cause of the fire, possibly an electrical fault, is now being investigated by NSW Maritime.

Tweed Heads resident Anna Healy was fishing near Sullivan Memorial Park when she suddenly heard a loud bang.

"I was fishing with my son and we heard this incredible bang sound," Mrs Healy said.

"A guy who was nearby thought it could've been someone crashing on the bridge, but my son saw it and he said flames did come out and went up higher than the boat. …
