Maggie and Fraser - a Great Family Friendly Duo

Article excerpt

WHILE many might think an island adventure is out of the family budget, a couple of old favourites (both close to shore) offer some great options for everyone.

Magnetic Island, just off the coast of Townsville, and Fraser Island, a short transfer from Hervey Bay, are natural paradises with plenty of attractions for the whole family to enjoy.

Magnetic Island is only eight kilometres offshore from Townsville, or a 15-minute catamaran ride. It is home to 2500 permanent residents, covers 5185ha (more than half of which is national park), has the soaring Mt Cook rising 497m in its centre and features 24km of walking tracks through the giant eucalypt and hoop pine forests, patches of rainforest and granite boulder outcrops, 23 secluded beaches and bays and carries a World Heritage listing.

Add to this an abundant wildlife population of koalas, rock wallabies, possums and a variety of birdlife, all surrounded by cool, clear blue waters and you're pretty close to finding the world's best address.

Best way to explore Maggie is to grab a fun Mini Moke (remember them?) from Moke Magnetic and scoot around the 12km of sealed road for a couple of days.

For those of us not lucky enough to call Maggie home, the island offers a wonderful range of accommodation - there's budget hotels, backpacker hostels and two new five star resorts, One Bright Point and the king of resorts, Peppers.

Maggie's secluded bays and rocky headlands provide a home for fringing coral reefs and, for the novice snorkeller and for families, it is the perfect.

You can even do the waters by horseback - Blueys Ranch will take you on a horse ride through some stunning bushland, bring you out at Horseshoe Bay Beach.

Maggie has the reputation of being one of the best places in Australia to learn to dive and offers affordable, high quality beginner courses. …
