WE at the Coffs Coast Advocate are all pretty stoked with how our participants in the aquatic sports have been doing lately.

Over the last week there have been so many good news stories coming thick and fast out of the wave-riding and surf life saving scene that one runs the risk of offending somebody by leaving them off the list.

In surfspeak, the piece of coastline between Wallabi Point (where your scribbler first made a mess of his hairstyle by using too much peroxide) and Mullaway, is classed as 'local'.

It may take five hours to drive by car but the stretch of sand itself is merely a hop, step and a jump from beach to beach.

During these last three days alone, we've had Courtney Hancock finish runner-up in the Coolangatta Gold, James Athorn win a second Barney Miller Classic and Kelly Delang take out Cambo's Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage. One's desk and computer at the moment is a sea (no pun intended) of surf pictures, stories of success and notes of which websites to check for the latest update on victories all over the globe.

And now, word arrives from the World Surfing Games on the Costa de Caparica that Heath Joske on the shortboard and Harley Ingleby on his trusty longboard, have been instrumental in Australia winning their third straight teams championship, downing the good ol' boys and girls from the US of A.

Like ... wasn't it just last week that one kept running out of breath while trying to keep track of Heath as he flitted between Valla, Diggers and Bells Beaches, on a whirlwind of competitive surfing?

And now ... Portugal?

Dear readers, back around the time Wallies captain George Gregan trousered a contract to act as ambassador-at-large for Coffs Harbour, one made himself extremely unpopular with our civic fathers for daring suggest certain other parties might provide better value for money. …
