THERE was some trepidation and a lot of very inquisitive looks from motorists in the Kunda Park business precinct last week when a couple of "superhighway information patrolmen" operated a broadband speed camera.

Fearing they could be nabbed for speeding, most hit the brakes, while others flashed oncoming traffic to warn them of the imminent peril.

There was no cause for concern, however. The "patrolmen" were part of a cheeky stunt organised by emerging Queensland Telco Allegro Networks, to mark the arrival of their new business grade wireless broadband service.

The campaign also included ear-catching radio ads made to sound like a police announcement. The motorists in fact were not the target - the patrolmen were pointing their speed guns at local business houses suspected to be still laboring under the old style ADSL broadband service.

Allegro managing director David Waldie said the new network, part of the Federal Government and local council's Connecting the Coast initiative, offered download speeds of up to 40MB per second. …
