'It's Quite Normal to Feel Isolated and Hurt'

EVERY person is unique and their problems usually have a different solution.

It is this diversity that led Sue Miller to pursue a career in psychology and counselling.

Conversely, however, Ms Miller says it is important for clients to know that their problems are not uncommon, that there is nearly always a pattern.

Ms Miller became manager of Relationships Australia Sunshine Coast five months ago after traversing a challenging 14-year learning curve.

"I've worked my way up through drug and alcohol rehabilitation, drug addicted youth, and job by job worked out the area I wanted to be in. Then it blossomed into where I am now," she said.

"I definitely think it's the flexibility, changing clients, always having something different to do, different needs to meet and the constant challenges that are the hooks which kept me there.

"What attracted me to this job was the outstanding name Relationships Australia has and the expectation on staff to be well equipped and knowledgeable.

"It is terrible to see clients at their worst but they've got the courage to see us so it's our job to provide a shoulder to lean on or to provide the tools to cope in the next few days, weeks or months.

"My background is working in prisons so I heard lots of horror stories daily.

"For me, working in the prisons, I saw a lot of sexual perpetrators, high-profile offenders often in the media, people who killed old ladies, the list goes on.

"What I found satisfying was working through with offenders to find out why they got to this point, why they are repeat offending, and being able to help them stop offending.

"They are hard clients to work with because they are quite complex. But people in the prison system end up in the community, so you often see people who have been in prison. …
