Snooker: Shock and Awe as Orr Storms in; A 6-0 Defeat Wasn't Unsettling

Article excerpt

STEVE ORR recorded a superb win at home to Alec Appleby (Darlington SC) in the Alliance Teesside Snooker League.

Orr, playing from Newtown Social, won the first three frames and made a 33 break to race away in frame four. However he missed frame ball red when leading by 36, and Alec cleared up with a 41 break to pinch the frame on the black.

This didn't unsettle Steve, however, as he made breaks of 39 and 30 to win the match 5-1.

Earlier Steve suffered a heavy defeat at Easington WMC, going down 6-0 to home player Bourne.

Orr lost both the first two frames on the pink, and Bourne won the next with a 45 break.

After guaranteeing the win in the fourth, Bourne made a good break of 75 in frame five and he polished off the final frame with ease.

Alan Roberts (Samuelsons), travelled to Darlington Cricket Club to play Mark Stainsby and, in a close battle, the result ended all square at 3-3.

Martin Ball (Lumley Snooker Club), travelled to Hartlepool and came away from the Athaneum club with a 4-2 win over Mark Windsor.

It obviously put pressure on Mark, as he then travelled to Darlington SC and lost 4-2 to Adam Sharman.

Other results: Martin Ball drew 3-3 with John Nicholson (Darlington Navy Club); Phil McMasters beat John Ferguson 5-1; Matt Hillier beat Andrew Cuthbertson 4-2.

THE Cleveland Referees Association have released the preliminary round draws for this year's snooker events.

The Leo Robb North East Individual Snooker Memorial Trophy has received a total of 42 entries, meaning ten preliminary round games. The draw for the best of five frame games is:

1 Richard Beckham (-7) (Red Unionists) v Gary Beckett (scr) (Red Lakes); 2 Andrew Cuthbertson (7) (St'n Buffs) v Mark Windsor (7) (Athenaeum); 3 Michael Rhodes (-14) (Ferryhill WMC) v Barry Chapman (7) (Red Unionists); 4 Ryan Clark (scr) (H'pool Snooker) v Nathan Hinchcliffe (21) (Red Lakes); 5 Robin Wilson (scr) (St'n Buffs) v Ian Whittle (21) (Red Cons); 6 Michael Cornelius (35) (H'pool Snooker) v Phil McMasters (7) (St'n Buffs); 7 Alan Fletcher (21) (Erimus) v Mick Beevers (7) (Hardwick); 8 Mick McDermott (21) (Red Cons) v Dave Beckett (7) (Red Lakes); 9 Michael Williams (14) (H'pool Snooker) v Alan Roberts (7) (Samuelsons); 10 M Wallace (28) (Erimus) v Neil Allison (21) (Roseworth). …
