Forum Offers Info on Stimulus Grants; People Attending Hoped to Learn How to Get into Position for the Funds

Before the fight, there's the handshake. It's part of the reason Len Pappalardo, a construction manager, came to Florida Community College at Jacksonville's downtown campus Monday.

He and hundreds of others who filled the school's technology center are trying to get into position for grants through the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Pappalardo, senior project manager for Keville Enterprises, said he was there more for networking than education. Much of the talk -- Jacksonville is poised for about $40 million in funding, there is more money to compete for, Mayor John Peyton wants the city to have clear priorities for the grants -- had been said before.

"You have to be persistent and get out and meet people. You can't just make a couple of phone calls," he said. "People get frustrated because it's not easy. But doing business is not easy."

U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Fla., put on Monday's forum to help Jacksonville residents get to know what's coming. …
