I would like to rant about the upkeep of the landscaped areas that belong to the city in the downtown area. There is a small park on the back side of the new library downtown. This park area has not been maintained since before Thanksgiving. As a resident of downtown, I do try to take pride in the area in which I live and have called the city three times and complained about the situation to no avail. The grass has not been tended to in five months, there are weeds waist-high in the grass and plant beds, as well as the surrounding landscaping. I just feel this looks totally disgraceful.

WHY A RAISE FOR CONGRESS?

Of course American taxpayers have a right to be angry about AIG bonuses when they are paying for them. Many people have lost their jobs, homes, cars, insurance, etc., while these executives get ... bonuses. But what about the righteous indignation of certain members of Congress over AIG bonuses when they have just voted to extend their own automatic pay raises?

STOP FIGHTING THE CIVIL WAR

The Civil War is over and, like it or not, it is American history. The folks who use the Confederate symbols to intentionally agitate others are wrong. To the ones who are offended, get over it. If you can be offended, you will be.

IT WASN'T A RELIGIOUS SONG

How sad that the parents of two third-graders could ruin a program for an entire class by claiming that the song they were going to sing was a religious one! In no way did the song purport to teach a particular religious doctrine; it was only reiterating the words on our currency. If the majority approves of the song, why does a very small minority have the power to overrule the majority?

ON THE OTHER HAND, YES, IT WAS

The parents suing should be commended for standing up for liberty, principle and the Constitution and opposing nonsense dogma. …
