HAVE you tried holding your breath for more than two minutes?

To make this a real challenge, do it while diving 20 metres below the ocean surface and try to go spear fishing at the same time trying to come up with a big catch that can win you a competition.

A total of 40 divers from all around Australia converged on Woolgoolga last weekend for the 15th annual Australian Blue Water Freediving Classic and they were all up to the challenge set out above.

The Blue Water Classic is one of the major spear fishing competitions in Australia and believe or not, a select few of the divers were underwater for more than three minutes at a time and reaching depths of 30 metres.

If you want to know how deep that is, next time you drive along Park Beach have a look at Pacific Towers because the multi-story apartment block is roughly that height.

Alex Ritchie was the overall winner for the weekend with a wide variety of species in his bag (competitors are only allowed to catch game fish and only one of each species). …
