Reality Check Ahead; Brahmans Test New-Found Skills against Country Opposition

RUGBY UNION: The Thrifty Central Queensland Brahmans have suffered some heavy losses in recent weeks but for Alec Sutherland that is just a part of playing against the best.

Sutherland knows it has been tough but the games against Brisbane opposition have been matches the Brahmans would like to win rather than ones they have to.

The first of the "have to win" games is tomorrow when Townsville visits Rugby Park.

Sutherland admits the 2009 Brahmans have had to step up a level but sees that as a good thing for the players and for rugby in Central Queensland.

"It's great to see how good they (Brisbane teams) really are," he said.

"Playing rugby here, all the teams are about the same."

With the Brisbane sides having more players competing for positions and the organisation of the sport far more professional, the intensity of the game is at a different level.

"They had the combinations, right across the park they are very good," he added.

Sutherland has another reason to look forward to this week's game as he has been given the fly-half's jersey and that means he will be giving the orders.

"I probably go over the top," he admitted.

"I like to get on the field and move people around.

"But what happens on the pitch stays there."

Despite heavy losses the Brahmans have gained in confidence as they are the best performed country side, beating one Brisbane side and having a close tussle with another.

Having been a member of the Brahmans for a couple of years Sutherland is impressed with the 2009 squad and the attitude of the players to the extra commitment they have been asked to provide.

"They've shown that commitment, it's been a big pre-season," he said.

"I don't think people thought it would be such a big step up. …
