HOCKEY: All Blacks men's team finally joined the winners circle, with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Premier League heavyweights Hervey Bay on Friday night.

After going down 3-2 to Cities in the first round, before losing 1-0 to the Cooloola Heat in Gympie last weekend, last year's premier's title defence was on shaky ground, but with a few personnel changes, the All Blacks' season prospects have brightened.

"We have a new bloke, Glenn Austin, who originally just wanted to play second grade, but after seeing him at training we slotted him into centre half this week and he went really well," All Blacks president Rhys Grills said.

"They really toughed out that win, it was a handy one too, Hervey Bay have always been a very good side."

It has been a colourful start to the season for the Blacks, with last week's spiteful Gympie grudge match featuring four yellow cards and a red card, but Grills insists everything is back on track and they remain a realistic chance at securing another premiership. …
