This All-Round Good Bloke Is Deserving of His Encores

Article excerpt

RACING: The brilliant win by Arcup at Dalby last Thursday couldn't have come at a better time for Stewart Park, Alton Downs studmaster Ray Coyne.

Arcup was one of two yearlings sold by Ray (sired by Stewart Park stallion Encores) at last year's Capricorn Yearling Sale.

As Lot 55, the chestnut colt had an all Stewart Park pedigree, as his dam Zeebelle was by former resident stallion Radjhasi from the daughter of another tenant stallion from Bonfield.

Regrettably, in some way Encores has been overlooked by many breeders which is a tragedy as he is arguably the best performed, bred and without any doubt named thoroughbred stallion based in Central Queensland.

Last things first, Encores is by the outstanding Biscay horse Marscay from Stage Hit a daughter of Century and Oh Calcutta - hence his clever name of Encores.

Encores won five races and $531,076 in prizemoney including the Group 2 STC Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill, Sydney.

However, it was twice in defeat that Encores really stood out as something very special during the winter of 1996.

It was then that he finished second to Suntain in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350 metres) as well as second behind Danasinga in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).

Before being acquired by Ray Coyne for Stewart Park about five years ago, Encores stood at the Greta West Stud in Victoria from where his fine gallopers De Capo and Leather Lane were conceived.

At the Central Queensland Yearling Sales in Rockhampton on Sunday April 19, Ray Coyne's Stewart Park Stud has a draft of six yearlings.

This comprises four Encores, a Bagger Vance and a King Cugat(USA) yearling.

The chestnut Encores colt from the Danehill Dancer mare Crimson Carnation is infused with winners through the pedigree and even allowing for his November 4 birth date should be keenly sought after. …
