Worker Caught Stealing Money from Open Safe; Thief Earns Probation

POCKETING $790 cash from his boss's open safe has left Christopher Adam Barber without a job and subject to 18 months probation.

Barber, 20, had been in the office of the Toowoomba butcher for whom he worked on February 17, the city's Magistrates Court heard yesterday.

While the manager was in the front of the shop attending the cash tills, Barber noticed the safe door open and helped himself to $790 cash, prosecutor Sergeant Mark McKenzie told the court.

However, the manager returned to the office and caught Barber red-handed and he was sacked on the spot.

At the time, Barber was subject to a 12-month probation order imposed by the same court on April 14 last year for three counts of stealing, the court heard.

A Department of Community Corrections officer told the court Barber's response to probation had been unsatisfactory and recommended the order be revoked and he be resentenced for the original offences. …
