Ag Holds Up Aussie Economy; without Agriculture, Jobless Figures Would Look Much Worse: Rimfire Resources

LATEST figures reveal that although the total number of advertisements for agricultural jobs fell in February, the sector is still outperforming other key areas of the economy.

The Rimfire Rural Jobs Index released earlier this month shows the total number of agricultural jobs advertised in newspapers and on the internet has fallen 26 per cent between February 2008 and February 2009.

Figures from the ANZ Job Advertisement Series, also released at that time, show that across all sectors, the total number of job advertisements fell 39.8 per cent during this period.

Rimfire Resources managing director Mick Hay said the difference showed agriculture was still the backbone of the Australian economy.

"We've seen the numbers of job advertisements fall across the board over the past 12 months but what's becoming clear is that the agricultural sector is holding up better than other sectors, which are being drawn deeper into the GFC vortex.

"Agricultural job advertisement numbers have outperformed national figures by more than 14 percentage points," he said. …
